Of particular note on that CD was the song Teremtés, which means "Creation" in Hungarian. Off and on over the years I kept trying to find an English translation to the lyrics, until just about a year ago I found someone online who helped -- who happened also to be someone high up in the Hungarian consulate of my American city.  She was kind enough to take time out to translate the lyrics, which I further massaged around the edges. These lyrics are quite remarkable, when one considers they were written by a devout Christian (Orthodox, I believe) such as Márta Sebestyén, adapting them from a traditional Hungarian folk song.  The lyrics toy with the idea that man creates god, and that man creates his own world -- which, yet, is precariously vulnerable, a paper ship amid overwhelming waters which, too, are his own doing, "his own deluge" which his pitiable paper ship is meant to survive, though ultimately doomed.  This playful insouciance with such a grave subject matter reminds one of Plato's counsel about mythopoesis in the hands of the lover of wisdom as "serious play".  The startling import of the song's limpid lines suggest that the frailty of man extends even to the saving story upon which he depends, or which he may deign to ignore or scorn. Russian proverb: "The longest way out, is the shortest way home."

<img height="393" id="irc_mi" src="http://theefaction.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/usa9.jpg" style="margin-top: 0px;" width="305" /> A reader's review of Diana West's new book American Betrayal, writes: "Heavily documented, her thesis is that the US didn't win World War II, the Soviets did with massive help from the British Commonwealth and the US. In fact, this was the conclusion of M. Stanton Evans and Herbert Romerstein's book of 2012, Stalin's Secret Agents: The Subversion of Roosevelt's Government. On p. 199 the authors state that "It's evident that the real victors of World War II weren't the United States and Britain, France or China, but the Soviet Union and its world wide web of vassals, satellites, and agents." This is to confuse two things which should be kept distinct: 1) winning a war 2) losing a war, but managing to attain critical advantages after the defeat and through circumstances of its aftermath.  Thus, the Soviet Communist infiltrations of America and other parts of the West post-WW2 would obviously not have been necessary, had the U.S.S.R. won the Cold War (beginning, of course, in 1946).  Are that reviewer, and Diana West, and M. Stanton Evans indulging in rhetorical hyperbole?  It doesn't seem so.  But then, one wonders what sense such a "victory" has.  They'd have to explain how it is that a Communist victory as they claim it has transpired would be different from a full-blown victory at the end of WW2.  And, among many other things, they'd have to explain Ronald Reagan. I don't think this is a quibble, since I think Diana West may tend to exaggerate a certain aspect of the entire arc of the Cold War.  And part of that exaggeration finds nourishment in that curiously delimited and simplistic view of PC MC and of Leftism (two distinct movements) which seems characteristic of some conservatives, and of those in the Counter-Jihad.  When we find a major 16th-century philosopher and politician, Montaigne for example, purveying maxims and axioms strikingly similar to PC MC, how can we say that Communist agents are to blame?  But one doesn't have to go back as far as Montaigne; one could simply go back to the 18th century Enlightenment, long before Marx was even in diapers. Note: I am not saying that Communism's infiltration is not pernicious.  Only that it has had to exploit a pre-existing sociopolitical culture in the West (and indeed, it grew out of that pre-existing culture in part; it certainly didn't drop from Neptune).  And thus, an important part of the way back to our former rationality has to tackle, and unravel, the right thing -- not some exaggerated and misleading and simplistic version of it.

This general potential of dissatisfaction can then be exponentially aggravated by the disturbances of personal and social existence through events with historical mass effect. To the class of these events belong a variety of phenomena. From the demographic side one would have to consider large population movements through migration and conquest, unsettling whether peaceful or violent, unsettling alike for conquerors and conquered; furthermore, sudden decreases of population caused by human epidemics, mass starvation caused by the spread of animal and vegetable pests, and increases of population beyond the subsistence level provided by the economic and technical potential of place and time. From the political-pragmatic side one would have to consider the vast destruction of ethnic cultures by the imperial entrepreneurs of the Ecumenic Age and the subsequent rise of imperial-dogmatic civilizations from the wreckage of the ecumenic empires. For the modern period one would have to add the creation of the power differential between the Western and all other civilizations through the intellectual, scientific, commercial, and industrial revolutions in the West, as well as the exploitation of the differential to the global limits; the decline of Western power and order through the internal conflicts caused by the rise of imperial nationalisms and of equally imperial ideological movements; and the resistance of the non-Western civilizational societies to the destruction of their own cultures by a Western global ecumenism.  The resisters are keenly aware of the discrepancy between thedisorder they have to suffer and the order they have lost, or which they despair to maintain or judge to lie beyond any probability of ever being gained; they are disappointed with the slowness of the movement in reality toward the order they experience as the true order demanded by the Beyond; they are morally aroused by, and angry with, the misery that the slowness of the transﬁguring movement in reality entails; and the experiences of this class can heighten to the conviction that something is fundamentally wrong with reality itself, if it always bungles the movement toward the order supposed to be its meaning. At this point, when the resistance to disorder transforms itself into a revolt against the very process of reality and its structure, the tension of formative existence in the divine-human movement and countermovement of the metaxy can break down; the presence of the Beyond, its Parousia, is no longer experienced as an effective ordering force, and, as a consequence, the questioner for truthcan no longer tell a story that is part of the story told by the It-reality. Muslim Taxonomy

<img height="393" id="irc_mi" src="http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/bio203/2011/cullen_jaso/templates/Alex%20Wild%20attempt%202.jpg" style="margin-top: 0px;" width="304" /> Over the past decade or so, various Western analysts and pundits have generated several subspecies of the Muslim in order to: a) pretend to distance themselves from the term "Moderate Muslim" so they can look tough and no-nonsense about the problem of Islam, while b) retaining a functional equivalent of that very same term, as a sweeter-smelling rose by another name. Since 911, a needlessly complicated taxonomy of Muslims has developed.  This taxonomy is predicated on the claim that harmless Muslims exist.  How many?  Usually it's a lot -- enough to make a difference.  Often it is assumed that the vast majority of Muslims are harmless.  If not a vast majority, surely a majority -- at least enough hundreds of millions to help the person making the claim feel ethically better about himself, knowing he isn't "bigoted" or "racist", or at the very least, that he's not a kook. The most common taxonomic designator of the harmless Muslim is the Moderate Muslim.  This subspecies may be identified by its conspicuous lack of Islamic garb, it's often clean-shaved face (usually when male), and when female, the lack of a hijab (or only a token Jackie-Onassis-style scarf, often of multiculturally diverse colors), and generally a constellation of subtle behaviors that seem "secular" (seemingly hip laxity about sexuality, an amorphously liberal-seeming disposition, a nod in the direction of music appreciation, even ostensible feminism).  Since this term has come under severe derision over the years -- even on the outskirts of the Maintream -- and when the starry-eyed Softie thinks he can get away with it, other concepts have been generated to replace it: the Lax Muslim the (relatively) Non-Observant Muslim the Muslim Ignorant of His Own Islam the Tragically Heroic Muslim Victim who wants to leave Islam, but can't or otherwise give us any signs he or she actually belongs in this category, for fear of violent reprisals from his or her Muslim brothers and/or sisters. There may be other permutations, but they all have the same function:  to take the place of the increasingly embarrassing term Moderate Muslim -- not in order to abandon that term and improve on its deficiencies, but rather to retain its deficient uselessness as a pleasantly smelling rose by another name.  Why would people (even many in the Counter-Jihad) do this, the reader might ask?  Well, it reflects a desperate need -- a need to believe that there must exist these Moderate Muslims.  This need is based on a dread that, if one really faced the horrible prospect which the ever-growing mountain of data about Islam opens up, one would be forced to condemn 1.3 billion people. Even worse, one would have to condemn at least one billion non-white people who, furthermore, reflect a wonderful multicultural diversity. From such a prospect, the modern white Westerner recoils, for he has been deeply inculcated in a revulsion of anything remotely hinting at "bigotry" and "racism" (along with its part-and-parcel: an irrational degree of self-criticism of his "shameful" white Western history and its horrible treatment of non-whites, far worse, so the modern white Westerner has been told and tells himself, than any other culture in history). Aside from this Autophobia the modern Western has (the irrational fear of himself, his own West, going down the slippery slope toward rounding up all those Brown People, putting them in camps, and exterminating them), there is also the related personal dimension whenever any modern Western has any personal encounters, even fleeting, with nice Muslims.  A typical comment I encountered on the Gates of Vienna blog capsulizes this neatly: I work for a couple of days a week in a charity shop (“goodwill”, I believe, in the US) in London. At the end of Ramadan a few weeks ago, one of our female regulars (I think Turkish; headscarf, no burka) brought in some cakes she’d made for Eid; my (also female) manager exchanged kisses with her in thanks.   The cakes were rather scented for my taste, but I find it hard to believe this woman was practising any kind of taquiya; she gained nothing by the gesture.   If there has to be a violent showdown to preserve our civilisation, I’d hate for people like her to be victims. Don’t know the solution, just wanted to say it. One way out of this dilemma, whether it's felt personally or is thought conceptually (or more likely a more or less incoherent amalgam of the two) is to develop a taxonomy which magically transforms the Mohammedan Umma into a wonderfully diverse multi-cultural Stir-Fry which is never "monolithic" whenever you want to criticize or condemn any Muslim word or deed that is flamingly hateful and violent, but which suddenly becomes quite monolithic whenever you want to praise Islam and its Muslims. My interest in this mytho-political taxonomy has moved from a fascination at the way Leftists indulge in it, and then the broader somewhat subtler ways in which PC MCs purvey and perpetuate it, on to the maddening habit of those who should know better -- those in the Counter-Jihad.  Thus was born my term asymptotic, to denote the person who makes a big show of being politically incorrect and who claims to disdain PC MC, and who therefore claims to be oh so tough on Islam -- but when the rubber meets the road, he suddenly manifests a telltale tic of PC MC himself. In a recent essay by Baron Bodissey over at the Gates of Vienna blog, "Moderate" vs. "Dormant", he tackles this very issue, but in so doing, ironically, he seemed to have had an asymptotic tic, reflected in a couple of places.  The title itself flirts with the asymptotic equivalency, though at least it also suggests the uncomfortably temporary nature of such an equivalent: "dormant" implies that, while the Muslim is deemed to be "lax" or whatever, he may become "activated" at an unpredictable time and place. More directly, Bodissey thinks that labeling all Muslims as "toxic" is "not a good idea".  Why?  Because, says Bodissey, Muslims are "various". Bodissey is here confusing seeming with knowing.  Sure, Muslims certainly seem various.  But our exigent and more pertinent problem is that we cannot tell which variation gives us knowledge of whether any given Muslim is harmless.  Given our utter inability to discern this important feature of "variation", this feature becomes not only useless to us, it becomes positively counterproductive -- a term Bodissey used in fact for the "labeling" of all Muslims as "toxic".  I.e., Bodissey has the problem precisely backwards.  The rest of his asymptotic tic builds upon this.  When, in the comment section, I pointed out that his locution that it is "very, very hard to tell the difference between a lapsed Muslim and a dormant Muslim" should be scrapped because, in fact, it is impossible to tell this difference, not simply "very, very hard" -- Bodissey agreed with me.  Had I not pointed this out, however, his asymptotic locution would have apparently stood as it was.  And note the assumption of the existence of the "lapsed" Muslim -- yet another subspecies we can add to our mulitplicating taxonomy; and yet another one that is pragmatically useless (even if theoretically it make seem to make sense, and even though it may make us feel ethically better for us to know that we have such a refined and sophisticated ability to discern differences among Muslims and avoid the uncouth and simplistic faux pas of the Monolith.

From the "What a Name!" Department...

Prior to working at the University, she was Section Head for Clinical Outcomes Research in the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region. <div align="justify"> </div><div align="justify">Dr. Hadjistavropoulos founded the Psychology Training Clinic at the University of Regina, and received a Canada Innovation Foundation grant to develop a state of the art Clinical Health Psychology Area for teaching, research and practice at the University of Regina.</div><div align="justify"> </div><div align="justify">What's remarkable about the name is that it reflects a monstrous hybrid of Muslim and Greek Christian.  A hadji is a person who has made the pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca.  The "stavro-" segment of her name signifies the Greek word for "cross" (stauros), and the "-poulos" means in Greek "son of" or "child of".</div><div align="justify"> </div><div align="justify">Meanwhile, as we all know, "Heather" is an English name, though coined relatively recently, apparently (the 19th century perhaps), it stems from the flower by the same name, which in turn stems from the heath whence those pagani of the wastes of the countryside in various parts of Europe tended to remain uncouth in their resistance to the civilizing force of Christianization.  The eponymous heathen would come to denote an "infidel" of sorts, and often was used in medieval times to denote the Mohammedan.  Of course, in these latter days, "Heather" has come to be an unremarkably fashionable name for bourgeois white girls (dipping into a subculture -- namely, of the Goth ennui and anomie exemplified in the movie Heathers -- of that same bourgeoisie). The juxtaposition of such an airheaded California name to that hideous surname would be merely amusing, were it not indicative of an ongoing anti-civilizational process of the Hijra (another H word from that religion from Hell) of stealth jihad.  One assumes it's her married name; and while she looks as white as Wonder Bread, her husband (with the similarly unmuslim name "Thomas") has just a soupçon of the southeast Mediterranean in his otherwise ruggedly handsome white looks, and one wonders what confluence, or clash, of Ottoman and Christian occurred in his heritage; for as sure as any scientific law, any hybrid of Turkish/Muslim and Greek must have its sordid and sad underbelly. P.S.:  Googling the name "Hadjistavropoulos" and "Islam", I didn't find anything damning, but I did find a reference list for some unremarkable academic journal article in the field of Psychology, which happened to include the following doozy: Ghorbani, N., Watson, P. J., & Khan, Z. H. (2007). The Myth of the "Golden Age" of Islam

<img alt="http://princessjt.edublogs.org/files/2012/08/Islam-books-1-640x480-2kywmcu.jpeg" class="decoded" src="http://princessjt.edublogs.org/files/2012/08/Islam-books-1-640x480-2kywmcu.jpeg" /> Back in the early part of this year, I had a discussion in the <a href="http://canilgcmsp.blogspot.com/2013/02/yet-more-on-voegelinians.html#comments">comments section</a> of an essay on my blog here with an anti-Islam analyst (a "civilian" like me, but that shouldn't be relevant to my point) who was defending another anti-Islam analyst (not a "civilian" but somehow more "legit"), Robert Reilly.  I've had my suspicions of Reilly's thesis of the diremption of medieval Islam, implying that Islam was relatively hunky-dory before it took some inexplicable turn at some point in the Middle Ages toward "extremism" (as though it wasn't extremist from the moment Muhammad began his mischief). It turns out my suspicions were correct; and the civilian analyst who defended Reilly should have known better, but I suspect his asymptotic tendencies lead him to need to believe that Islam is not through and through starkly totally utterly, monolithically evil and dangerous. Dry (albeit catastrophically alarming) statistics

Go through each profile and you will find that 20 are motivated by ideology -- Marxism, socialism, Maoism, fascism, Nazism, etc. The rest, 124, are motivated by religion: 17 involve Irish Christians, 7 involve non-Irish Christians and Sikhs, 7 involve other religious entities -- 93 involve Muslims. Bing/Google search “civil wars in the world” and then research who fights in them: 80% of involve Muslims. They fight against all cultures and religions.
